The Fire Bureau of Nantou County Government was established on Mar 18, 1999, as the police department and fire department were separated into independent bodies. The Fire Bureau is specialized in fire prevention, disaster rescue, and emergency aids. Mr. Lin, Tsung-Chi, the then commander of firefighting police brigade of Police Bureau, took over the Bureau as the first director. The Bureau consists of 11 sections and office, 3 fire control groups, 22 brigades and a staff of 559. Nantou County is a vast administration that focuses mainly on agriculture but is weak in the development of resources. The massive threats of latent disasters are lurking due to the violent climate changes that come with the greenhouse effect. In addition to the three major tasks, namely the prevention of fire, disaster rescue and emergency aids as the law requires, therefore, the Fire Bureau is working on disaster prevention, disaster evacuation and emergency aids for the socially disadvantaged in response to all kinds of possible compound disasters. We are committed to providing better all-round service for citizens, and build an environment where citizens have better living quality and better protection for their lives.
The firefighting in Nantou back in the Japanese ruling days started when males were gathered in a group called “Young Men’s Group” for simple firefighting and rescue tasks. As World War II came to an end in 1945, the firefighters were placed under the control of (military section of) township offices and renamed “fire squadron of police defense.” A regular fire brigade was stationed at each of Nantou, Caotun, Puli, and Zhushan and equipped with manual hand-pushed fire pumps for firefighting and rescue. In 1955, the firefighting tasks were transferred to Nantou County Police Bureau (under the security section) with the chief of security section doubling the firefighting brigade commander and in change of firefighting. 1958, the firefighting police brigade was established and officially included in the organization of Police Bureau. The first commander was Mr. Ching Yu-San, followed by Wan Kuo-Shu, Shih Tsu-Mou, Chen Fa-Shen, Yang Si-Chuan, Wu Shang-Yuan, Hsu Ching-Yuan, and Lin Tsung-Chi.
